There are many meanings for the word values, including assessments, cost, price, meaning and significance.
But when asked what are the values one holds dear, ones to which we aspire, the immediate meaning is clearly, what are those things of significance in our lives to which we aspire.

If I had a penny for every time I heard someone say, "But I don't want to be rich; I just want to be comfortable!" I'd have about £3.87 by now. (I really should have used pounds, not pennies. I'd be a lot more comfortable myself if I had).
